## Short answer
Gypsum boards are used for interior walls and ceilings and are standard material in modern construction. Gypsum is a mineral material (calcium sulphate) extracted from nature or as a byproduct from power plants. It is fire-retardant, easy to install, and very suitable for interiors.
## Who it is relevant for
Homeowners, studios and agents researching material choices.
## What FT can prepare
- Summarise material properties, GWP, common uses, renovation relevance and alternatives.
## What the architect validates
- Whether the material fits the existing building, detail, durability, moisture and documentation needs.
## Key figures

| Metric | Value |
| --- | --- |
| GWP | 0.39 kg CO₂-eq/kg |
| Density | 900 kg/m³ |
| Expected lifetime | 50+ years (indoor use) |
## Use

- Interior walls and partitions
- Ceilings
- Fire-protected structures
- Bathroom cladding (moisture-resistant gypsum)
## Renovation relevance
Gypsum boards are the standard material for interior renovations: new partitions, dropped ceilings, and surface renewal. Fast to install and easy to paint and finish.
## Comparison

| Material | GWP |
| --- | --- |
| Gypsum board | 0.39 |
| Fibre cement | 0.67 |
| Ceramic tiles | 0.7 |
| Aluminium | 8.24 |
## FAQ
### What is the difference between standard and moisture-resistant gypsum?
Moisture-resistant gypsum (green) is treated to withstand short-term moisture exposure. It is used in bathrooms behind tiles and in damp rooms. It is not waterproof alone — it requires a moisture barrier or tile covering.
### Can gypsum boards be recycled?
Gypsum can be crushed and recycled into new gypsum production or as a soil amendment (pH regulation). The market for recycled gypsum is growing. Many producers (KNAUF, SAINT-GOBAIN) accept returned gypsum.
### Is gypsum board a climate-friendly material?
Gypsum is one of the more climate-friendly non-natural building materials with relatively low GWP. Use of FGD gypsum (byproduct from flue gas desulphurisation) further improves the climate profile.
### What are the fire properties?
Gypsum releases bound water in fire, which delays fire spread. It is used in fire-rated constructions (F30, F60, F90). Greater board thickness and double layers provide better fire protection.

## Uncertainty and boundaries
Material numbers depend on product, EPD, assembly, lifetime and project context.
