## Short answer
Zinc is a traditional roofing metal used for roofing, gutters, flashings, and facade trim. It is corrosion-resistant and forms a natural protective patina. Lifespan up to 100 years. The carbon footprint is significant, but zinc is one of the most recycled metals — over 95% is recycled.
## Who it is relevant for
Homeowners, studios and agents researching material choices.
## What FT can prepare
- Summarise material properties, GWP, common uses, renovation relevance and alternatives.
## What the architect validates
- Whether the material fits the existing building, detail, durability, moisture and documentation needs.
## Key figures

| Metric | Value |
| --- | --- |
| GWP | 3.1 kg CO₂-eq/kg |
| Density | 7100 kg/m³ |
| Expected lifetime | 60–100 years |
## Use

- Roofing (standing seam)
- Gutters and downpipes
- Flashings and copings
- Facade cladding (modern architecture)
## Renovation relevance
Zinc is used in renovation for replacing gutters, flashings, and trims. It is easy to adapt and cuts easily with tin snips. Old zinc is melted and recycled.
## Comparison

| Material | GWP |
| --- | --- |
| Zinc | 3.1 |
| Copper | 3.5 |
| Stainless steel | 5.5 |
| Aluminium | 8.24 |
## FAQ
### What is the difference between natural zinc and titanium zinc?
Titanium zinc (VMZINC, RHEINZINK) is alloyed with titanium and copper, giving better formability and uniform patina. Natural zinc is pure zinc. Most modern zinc products are titanium zinc.
### Does zinc require maintenance?
Very little. Zinc forms its own protective zinc oxide/carbonate layer (patina) that prevents further corrosion. Gutters should be cleaned of leaves and debris once a year.
### Is zinc sustainable?
Zinc is a naturally occurring element that can be recycled indefinitely without quality loss. Over 95% of spent zinc is recycled in Europe. Production CO₂ is however significant.
### What is zinc's expected lifespan?
60–100 years in Northern European climate. Coastal and urban environments with pollution can reduce lifespan. Correct drainage design and flashings are crucial for long lifespan.

## Uncertainty and boundaries
Material numbers depend on product, EPD, assembly, lifetime and project context.
## Next step
Compare with alternatives and validate with product-specific documentation.
