Concrete Roof Tiles.
Concrete roof tiles have a moderate CO₂ footprint and are a practical, affordable roofing choice. Natural slate is the most climate-friendly alternative for pitched roofs.

What is concrete roof tiles?
Concrete roof tiles are cast stones of cement, sand and water. They are heavier than clay roof tiles but cheaper. Lifespan of 40–60 years depends on surface treatment. Moderate carbon footprint compared to clay tiles, as firing at high temperatures is not required.
Carbon Footprint Compared
Negative carbon footprint (green) indicates carbon storage. Data based on EPD averages from ECO Platform and estimates per EN 15804.

In Renovation
Replacing roof tiles is necessary in case of mechanical damage (hail, frost), overgrown moss, and roof leaks. Always consider adding roof insulation at the same time — it is much cheaper to do this during tile replacement.
Questions about concrete roof tiles
Are concrete roof tiles better than clay tiles?
Clay tiles are heavier (aesthetic advantage regarding patina) and last 80–100+ years. Concrete tiles are cheaper and easier to customise in shape and colour. The choice is about economy, aesthetics, and building tradition.
What does roof replacement with concrete tiles cost?
The cost of roof replacement including new underlay membrane typically ranges from 800–1,500 DKK/m² including labour. Concrete tiles are cheaper in material cost than clay, but labour cost is the same.
Does concrete roof tiles require maintenance?
Yes — concrete tiles should be cleaned for moss and algae every 5–10 years. Surface treatment (impregnation) can extend lifespan. Check annually for cracked or displaced tiles.
Can concrete and clay roof tiles be mixed?
No — never mix tile types. They have different water drainage, overlap, and thickness. Always replace an entire roof surface at the same time.
