BBR — Danish Building and Dwelling Register

The BBR is Denmark's official register of all buildings and dwellings. It contains data on size, materials, year of construction, heating system and more — and it's public.

The BBR (Bygnings- og Boligregistret — Building and Dwelling Register) is the Danish state’s official record of all buildings in Denmark. It contains authoritative data on every property: year of construction, floor area, construction type, roof material, heating system and more. It is freely accessible to anyone.

Why does it matter to you?

The BBR is the primary source of truth about your property. Banks, municipalities, insurance companies and estate agents all rely on BBR data. If the BBR contains errors, it can cause problems when selling, borrowing or applying for planning permission.

As a property owner, you are legally obliged to keep your BBR record up to date. If you’ve built an extension, changed the roof material or installed a heat pump, these changes must be registered — typically automatically via the planning process, but you can also report changes directly.

Key BBR fields you should know:

  • Floor area: Built area, total residential area, basement area
  • Year of construction: May differ from the actual construction year
  • Roof material and form
  • External wall material
  • Heating installation and supplementary heating
  • Energy label (linked to energy rating data)

Who maintains the BBR?

The Danish Building and Housing Authority (Bolig- og Planstyrelsen) is responsible for the BBR. Data is updated through municipality planning processes and owner-reported changes.

What if my BBR record is wrong?

You can report changes via your municipality or directly at bbr.dk as the property owner. Larger changes (extensions, conversions) are normally updated automatically after planning approval.

Does a BBR error affect my property tax?

Yes. The Danish Property Assessment Authority (Vurderingsstyrelsen) uses BBR data for property valuations. Errors in the BBR — for example, incorrect floor area — can affect your assessed value and property tax.
