Energy Label — Danish Energimærke

The Danish energy label (energimærke) rates a building from A to G based on its calculated energy consumption. It's mandatory for all property sales and rentals.

The Danish energimærke (energy label) rates a building’s energy efficiency on a scale from A (best) to G (worst), based on the building’s calculated annual energy consumption for heating, cooling, ventilation and hot water. It is mandatory for all property sales and rentals in Denmark.

Why does it matter to you?

The energy label directly affects:

  • Property value: Homes with A or B ratings typically sell for more than comparable D or E-rated homes
  • Running costs: The label estimates your annual energy bill, helping you budget
  • Financing: Some banks offer better mortgage terms for energy-efficient homes
  • Legal obligation: You must obtain a valid energy label before listing your property for sale or rent

A poor energy label (E, F or G) signals that significant investment in renovation may be needed to bring the building up to modern standards.

What the label covers

The energy label is prepared by a certified energy consultant (energikonsulent) who inspects the building and calculates:

  • Heat loss through walls, roof, windows and floor
  • Efficiency of the heating system
  • Hot water consumption
  • Ventilation losses

The result is expressed as kWh/m²/year. Below 52 kWh/m²/year earns an A2020 label (the highest current standard).

How to improve your rating

Common improvements that boost energy ratings:

  • Adding roof insulation (often quickest payback)
  • Replacing windows with triple-glazed units
  • Upgrading to a heat pump
  • Installing mechanical ventilation with heat recovery

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Danish energy label valid?

10 years, or until major alterations are made to the building.

Is an energy label the same as an LCA?

No. The energy label covers operational energy only. An LCA covers the full carbon footprint including embodied carbon in materials.

Where can I find my building’s energy label?

At energimærkning.dk — Denmark’s free public energy label database. Search by address.
